Title: Scheming with Color

Level: 5th Grade

Description: The color wheel is often seen as a simple, six colored circle, but in fact can be made into any piece of art. Students will be challenged to create their own version of the color wheel, including certain vocabulary that they have been introduced to previously and at the beginning of the lesson.

Objectives:
- Students will be able to mix secondary and other colors using primary colors.
- Students will be able to creatively solve the artistic problem of the color wheel
- Students will be able to develop their art vocabulary and be able to use it within their artwork and during critiques.

Materials:

Acrylic paints:

Paintbrushes

-Red

Bristol board

-Blue

Examples of color wheels

-Yellow

 

Sequence:

Day one: Students will be able to recall previously learned knowledge and verbalize their experiences
- Students will be asked what they have learned about color wheels and colors in their previous classes.
- A list will be composed on the board
- Scheming with color worksheet distributed...
- Students may work in groups for the rest of the period and complete it for homework.

Day two: Students will be able to creatively consider and manipulate ideas that solve a specific problem with restrictions
- Review worksheet
- Introduce color wheel project
- Students begin brainstorming ideas

Day three: Students will be able to visualize a final product and create a layout according to a developed idea
- Students are given their paper to sketch their final idea
- Begin initial layout of color wheel

Day four: Students will be able to apply their knowledge of color mixing to be able to mix secondary and other colors using only the primary colors
- Discussion about mixing colors
- Students begin mixing colors and painting their color wheels

Day five: Students will be able to work within a time constraint, and be able to rationalize their needs for more time
- Review of elements to include in the color wheel
- Students will continue working
- At the end of class they will be asked if they need more time, will be asked to rationalize their needs.

Day six: Students will be able to asses their own and others' work in a group setting
- Students allowed more work time
- Self assessment distributed and completed
- Short critique of pieces

Standards:
Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes:
- Students select media, techniques, and processes; analyze what makes them effective or not effective in communicating ideas; and reflect upon the effectiveness of their choices
- Students intentionally take advantage of the qualities and characteristics of art media, techniques, and processes to enhance communication of their experiences and ideas
Using knowledge of structures and functions:
- Students generalize about the effects of visual structures and functions and reflect upon these effects in their own work
- Students employ organizational structures and analyze what makes them effective or not effective in the communication of ideas
- Students select and use the qualities of structures and functions of art to improve communication of their ideas
