Title: Contrasto

 Level: 6th Grade

 Description: Working in black and white has always been an interesting challenge. In this lesson, students will be challenged to create a balanced composition that is interesting in only black and white using a new material. They will also be able to practice using different pressures with X-Acto knives on a special paper, Contrasto paper.

 Materials:

Drawing pencils

Erasers

8x10 manila paper

X-Acto blades & cardboard

Contrasto paper

Carbon paper

 Objectives:

bulletStudents will be able to create a visually balanced composition.
bulletStudents will be able to work within the constraints of only using black or white for their composition.
bulletStudents will be able to practice their skills using an X-Acto knife.

 Sequence:

Day One:

bulletIntro to project and balance
bulletShow examples
bulletStart working on plan

Day Two:

bulletContinue working on plan
bulletRevisit the concept of balance

 Day Three:

bulletDemo of transferring to Contrasto paper & cutting
bulletTransfer drawing to Contrasto
bulletStart cutting.

 Day Four:

bulletContinue cutting carefully
bulletShort discussion about pieces
