Title: Line Up!

Level: 5th Grade

Description: An exploration of line will lead students around the room! Lines can come in all shapes and sizes, directions and colors! During an exploration of different styles of line, students will be creating a border to go around the classroom that will be connected once their pieces are complete. Kandinsky’s works will be used as an inspiration and support for this project.

Objectives:
- Students will be able to use a ruler to measure their paper and their art boundaries
- Students will be able to experiment with different types of line
- Students will be able to manipulate different media to achieve different lines

Materials:

12x12 white paper

Rulers

Crayons

Tape/Tacks

Watercolors

 

Sequence:

Day one: Students will be able to follow verbal directions properly
- Students will be asked what kinds of lines they can think of
- List compiled on the board
- Paper distributed
- Students will be asked to mark two opposite edges of their paper every two inches
- Line Up! lesson will be explained and Kandinsky introduced

Day two: Students will be able to experiment with a new material application
- Students will make different kinds of lines on their paper with no restrictions other than the fact that the end points need to be on the marks that they made
- Each line should be different, students can choose from the list compiled previously, or make up their own
- Short demonstration of how to use watercolors
-Color resist will be discussed, and the results that they got
- Students will be asked to color in between some of their lines, going over some of the lines that they have made.
- Pieces will be hung to dry

Day three: Students will be able to relate their work to that of Wassily Kandinsky
- Self Assessment will be distributed and completed
- Pieces will be hung around the room, students will be able to see their artwork creating a border around the room
- Short discussion about students' pieces and the different types of lines that they were able to come up with, as well as their reaction to the resist process. How are their pieces similar to Kandinsky’s?
