Title: Marvelous Masks

Level: sixth grade

Description: Students will explore the world of masks. They will be able to gain a deeper understand of some of the different uses for masks, and the purposes for which they are made. Through this exploration, student will develop a plan and make their own mask.

Materials

-          Manila paper

-          Plastic mask molds

-          Plaster strips

-          tubs of water for each table

-          plastic tarps/bags

-          newspaper

-          masking tape

-          paint

-          hot glue guns

-          yarn

-          felt

-          glitter

-          other decorative materials

-          handout on masks

Objectives:

-          students will be able to demonstrate learning about the many purposes of masks through class discussion and through creating their own

-          students will be able to manipulate a new material, plaster strips, successfully

-          students will be able to turn their 2 dimensional plan for a mask into a 3 dimensional completed mask

Daily Sequence:

Day #1: introduction to masks, start planning on manila paper

Day #2: first layer of plaster strips, continue planning

Day #3: second layer of strips, finish up final plan

Day #4: demo on how to add forms, add forms to mask

Day #5: continue adding forms

Day #6: plan paint scheme on mask in pencil, start painting

Day #7: Finish painting

Day #8: adding textures, make display label
