Title: Roads Like "Broadway", Piet Mondrian

 Level: 2nd Grade

 Description: Piet Mondrian's work has always been a source of debate among art students and critics alike. However, Mondrian's piece "Broadway" provides a wonderful stepping off point for students to creatively explore their surroundings. "Broadway" is like a road map, and students can easily make the connection of Mondrian painting roads he knew, to them painting their own roads.

 Materials:

Drawing pencils

Erasers

paint (many bright colors)

18x24 white paper

 Objectives:

bulletStudents will be able to use "Broadway" as an inspiration piece for their own work of art
bulletStudents will be able to use paints and materials in a safe and respectful manner.
bulletStudents will be able to visually show the roads and cars and houses near their house and neighborhood.

 Sequence:

Day One: (based on a one hour period day)

bulletIntro to project
bulletshort discussion about Piet Mondrian's "Broadway"
bulletshort discussion & demo about drawing their own roads
bulletStudents work on drawing out their roads in pencil
bulletStudents may start painting once they have teacher approval

Day Two:

bulletTime to finish up painting
bulletclass comes back together in group to discuss their work
