Title: Places of Paper

Level: 5th Grade

Description: Students will be asked to think of a place that is special to them. After picking their “place” they will visually re-create this space through the use of paper collage. Different collage styles will be discussed, as well as how to represent space and create the illusion of depth using paper. They will also see an example of collage and discuss the use of color and how it creates a depth of space.

Objectives:
- Students will be able to analyze a piece of work using vocabulary from the principles of design.
- Students will be able to visually create the illusion of space and depth using a two dimensional format.
- Students will be able to understand how intensity and detail impact the perception of depth and volume.

Materials:

Scissors Glue Plain colored paper
x-acto knives markers Textured paper from previous lesson

Sequence:

Day one: Students will be able to discuss the artistic properties of the example piece and how it is successful

Introduction of the activity.
- The idea of a special place will be discussed and shared among students

Day two: Students will be able to visually create the illusion of space and depth using a two dimensional format
-

Day three: Students will be able to understand how intensity and detail impact the perception of depth and volume
-
Short talk about how detail in objects and intensity of color affects the viewer’s perception of what is near or far. Students will glue their piece and add details to describe their special place

Day four: Students will be able to analyze a piece of work using vocabulary from the principles of design.
-
Students are allowed some time to finish their pieces.
- Pieces will be displayed.
- Discussion about how each student was able to manipulate the materials differently to achieve a different look, as well as where the different layers of space are located in each piece
