Title:
Playtime with Paper!
Level:
5th Grade
Description:
Paper is often seen as simply white, sometimes with lines for writing. In this
lesson, students will be exploring different ways of making interesting paper
textures and patterns.
Objectives:
- Students will be able to experiment with a variety of different paper
texturing methods
- Students will be able to use materials respectfully and carefully
- Students will be able to discuss a variety of uses for paper
- Students will be able to utilize and combine multiple media application
processes
Materials:
Sequence:
Day
one: Students
will be able to analyze textured papers
- Discussion about a piece of white paper… how can it be made more interesting?
What can be done?
- Students will view examples of textured paper
- How do they think these textures were made? What other textures can they come
up with?
Day
two: Students
will be able to manipulate materials in a safe, respectful manner
- Students will be shown 2 different paper texture techniques
- Make at least 3 pages of each, with different colors.
- Try using complimentary colors, analogous colors… warm, cool…
Day
three: Students
will be able to utilize their color knowledge to create interesting pieces
- Students will be shown 2 new different paper texture techniques
- Make at least 3 pages of each, with different colors.
- Again, try using different color combinations and see what happens!
Day
four: Students
will be able to combine knowledge of texture
- Students will be asked to combine 2 or more of the different techniques. They
may choose to use one of their dry papers and put another texture over it, or
create a new one. Be sure the paper is dry before putting second/third
texture on!
- hang all pieces by student. Talk about different color schemes and the
patterns that resulted from the different texture methods. How does this make
paper more interesting? How could they use this paper? How could the vocabulary
learned in the last unit be applied to this lesson?
Standards:
Understanding and applying media,
techniques, and processes:
- Students select media, techniques, and processes; analyze what makes them
effective or not effective in communicating ideas; and reflect upon the
effectiveness of their choices
- Students intentionally take advantage of the qualities and characteristics of
art media, techniques, and processes to enhance communication of their
experiences and ideas
Using knowledge of structures and functions:
- Students generalize about the effects of visual structures and functions and
reflect upon these effects in their own work
Reflecting upon and assessing the characteristics and merits of their work
and the work of others:
- Students compare multiple purposes for creating works of art
Making connections between visual arts and other disciplines:
- Students describe ways in which the principles and subject matter of other
disciplines taught in the school are interrelated with the visual arts
Assessment:
- Self Assessment questionnaire based on paper techniques and their texture
experience
