Title: Radial Name Designs

 Level: 4th - 5th grade

 Description: To get to know students' names, this is a great project! It also allows them to create some very interesting designs, and astound themselves, because every piece comes out looking different ,each fantastic!

 Materials:

Drawing pencils

Erasers

ruler

markers

9x9 white paper

 Objectives:

bulletStudents will be able to use materials in a safe and respectful manner.
bulletStudents will be able to use their name/nickname to create a radial pattern - understanding what the word "radial" means
bulletStudents will be able to follow whole group instruction to get started, and then work on their own.

Sequence:

Day One: (based on a one hour period day)

bulletIntro to project
bulletshow example piece, ask students if they can find the name in it
bulletshort discussiona bout how the pattern is made
bulletstudents go to their seats, get paper, pencil, & ruler
bulletgo through making the guidelines with whole group
bulletshort discussion and demo of how to insert name properly to create pattern

Day Two:

bullettime to continue working on name
bulletoutline name lines with black marker
bulletstudents start coloring design neatly with markers

Day 3:

bulletStudents finish coloring
bulletshort discussion about each others designs
