Remember when…

Description:
In the previous lesson, students explored a place that was special to them
individually. Now they will explore a special event that took place with family,
or friends. Faith Ringgold’s
Tar Beach
will be used as an example, and students will be asked what story they think
Faith is trying to tell. As another part of this project, students will be asked
to write the story of the event, as a narrative for the visual story they are
telling.
Objectives:
- Students will be able to thoughtfully analyze a piece of artwork by Faith
Ringgold.
- Students will be able to identify some of the key features of Faith Ringgold’s
work and incorporate similar styles in their piece.
- Students will be able to describe a special event visually and verbally,
comparing the two processes

Day
one: Students
will be able to relate their knowledge of the principles and elements of art to
a master work
- Display Faith Ringgold’s
Tar Beach
- Discussion of
what elements are used in it. (Repetition, color, shape, etc)
- What do students think Faith Ringgold is trying to say in her piece? Is there
a story behind it?
- Intro to the project
Day
two: Students
will be able to plan ahead and create visual plans and ideas
- Students begin initial sketches of their piece
- Rough draft of the written piece begun
- Talk about who was involved, what happened… how can they show the event
visually?
- What shapes are repeated in their piece? How is this similar to Faith
Ringgold’s work?
Day
three: Students
will be able to work on multiple tasks, keeping deadlines in mind
- Work on their pieces
- Talk about a border for the piece and how it is incorporated into the work
through repetition
- Work on written piece… check for spelling and grammar!
Day
four: Students
will be able to complete work within a time constraint
- Continue working on their drawings, add color and details
- Finish up papers
Day
five: Students
will be able to make connections between art and other disciplines
- Time to finish
pieces
- Display pieces and stories… students will talk about their story, how does
their picture relate?
- Hang pictures with stories next to them in the hallway.
