Title: Snowy Day Self Portraits

Level: 1st Grade

Description: Winter inspired portraits including lots of details! From zippers on jackets to stripes on hats, students will discover that their appearance changes when the colder weather comes!

Objectives:
- students will be able to identify features of a self portrait
- students will be able to create a self portrait that clearly communicates to the viewer the season in which the portrait was created
- students will be able to identify key features of the winter season and how it will affect their self portrait
- students will be able to use tools and materials in a safe and respectful manner

Materials:

9x12 manila paper pencils crayons

Sequence:

Day one:
- review "Self Portrait" vocabulary.
- how can we make a portrait that would work for this season? (What season is it?)
- what are some details that can make this more interesting?
- Start work, pencil first

Day two:
- continue working
- share self portraits

Standards:
Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes
:
- Students select media, techniques, and processes; analyze what makes them effective or not effective in communicating ideas; and reflect upon the effectiveness of their choices
- Students intentionally take advantage of the qualities and characteristics of art media, techniques, and processes to enhance communication of their experiences and ideas
Using knowledge of structures and functions:
- Students generalize about the effects of visual structures and functions and reflect upon these effects in their own work
